Many coaches and other service business owners go through the goal setting exercise every year only to see themselves not reach any of their goals by the year-end. At some point they give up and decide not to set goals any longer.
Not setting goals for your coaching business is a mistake, because all of the successful business owners I know actually set goals.
The secret to using your goals to make your coaching business more successful is setting realistic goals, checking in with your goals on a regular basis and working hard to achieve them.
Here is a plan to help you set goals that actually help your business and will help you achieve your goals:
Don't set very easy goals that you know you are going to achieve within a few months, such as getting one client or selling one e-book. At the same time, don't set the bar too high, as it will discourage you from even trying.
Set your goals somewhere in the middle -- pick something that you can achieve, but at the same time something that you will have to stretch to achieve.
Nothing makes your goals feel real more than putting them in writing and printing them out. You can go one step further and attach them next to your computer in your office, so that you can see them every day.

For example, if your goal is to start a blog, you need to include that in your schedule. During one week you should include blog software research into your schedule. Make a decision about which software to use for your blog the following week. Actually create a blog with the blogging software you have picked the week after that.
Not knowing how to do something is often the thing that prevents you from achieving your goals. For example, if your goal is to improve the sales letter for your product, you will not be able to do that if you do not know how to write effective sales letters.
Review your goals and decide what kind of classes you need to take or what you will need to learn to achieve your goals faster.
