Solopreneur Web Sites That SELL

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Hi, everyoneI have designed/re-designed web sites for a while, before starting to work more in online marketing coaching/consulting. I find that it is extremely important that your web site designer understands online marketing and uses this knowledge when designing your web site OR that you understand it yourself and make sure that your designer follows online marketing principles when designing your web site.

There are fabulous web and graphics designers out there, who can do a wonderful job creating a great looking web site. Unfortunately, they do not know much about online marketing, so they do not do anything for search engine optimization, don’t optimize the web site to get the most sign ups/sales, etc.

And there many of these great looking web sites online, but they do not bring in much in terms of what is really important to the web site owner – newsletter sign-ups, sales, etc.

One of the things that I teach my clients is how to create a web site that will actually sell what you have to offer. After following my advice one of my clients tripled her newsletter sign-ups without increasing her web site traffic – sometimes simple web site changes can make a huge difference in the results you are getting.

Every time a client asks me how to work with their web designer, here is what I tell them:

“Your web site is not a showcase of the great design/programming skills of your web designer. It is a place to promote your expertise AND a tool to generate leads and clients for your business. Make sure that you address this with your designer, otherwise you will spend your money on creating a great looking web site that does not sell.”

Stop Cold Calling!

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

If you hate cold calling, you are not alone. Many business owners hate cold calling, but since for many business owners this is the only technique to drum up new business, business owners just keep using it.

Not anymore! Using online marketing to get clients is one of the best ways to stop using cold calling. Online marketing is all about bring your potential customers, who are already looking for what you have to offer, to your web site. Since you are starting out with online marketing, here is a three step plan to help you get started:

1. Define your target market. Before you start marketing, you need to know who you are marketing to – who your perfect customers are.

2. Create/revise your web site to make it an effective sales tool. Your customers can’t talk to you when they are surfing the web, so the only thing that can convince them to buy from you is your web site.

It is extremely important to make your web site communicate the benefits of hiring you to your potential customers.

3. Use online marketing techniques to drive your target market to your web site. Now that you know who your target market is, and have an effective web site that communicates the benefits of hiring you to your target market, you need to bring your target market in.

Use search engine optimization, newsletter publishing, article marketing and other online marketing techniques to drive your target customers to your web site.

Here is the FREE Tutorial on marketing your business: How To Market Your Coaching Business – it discusses exactly how to use online marketing techniques to stop cold calling and get clients online.

How To Pick A Good Domain Name For Your Business

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Are you starting a business and need a domain name for it?

I always recommend a .com, because .com are still known as business domains. And I don’t recommend hyphens, as they are hard to remember. Imagine when you have to tell people your web site’s name in person or on the phone. You will have to say: “Firstword, hyphen, secondword.” Too much stuff to remember – people will remember the first and second words, but are likely to forget the hyphen.

I always recommend to my clients to make sure that the domain for their business name is available, and grab it, when they are in the initial stages of naming a business. For coaches, consultants, writers and other business owners who need to promote their expertise, a domain that is a combination of their first name and last name might work.

How To Promote Your Solopreneurs Business Better

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Every day I get questions from business owners about how to promote a business better online. What makes one web site sell much more then the other. And how to make more money, while spending less time on your online business.

Here are 5 things to focus on to take your business to the next level this year:

Choose a Good Domain Name. Make your domain name memorable and make it stand out. Think back to domain names you remember and type in in the browser without thinking about them. What makes them memorable?

Then, pick a name that people could associate with your business. Make your domain name stand out among your competition.

Have a Clear Message on your Web Site. How many times have you come to a web site, and left, because you weren’t sure what the web site was selling?

If you don’t capture your web site visitor’s interest right when they come to your web site, they will go elsewhere.

Sell Great Products/Services. When you believe in your products, it shows. Make sure you love what you you sell, and make sure your customers know about that. Make your enthusiasm shine through.

Provide Great Customer Service. When people get good customer service from a business once, they keep coming back to shop at that business again and again.

Keep your customers – provide exceptional customer services to keep the customers coming back.

Market to your Target Audience. Do you know who your target audience is? When you get targeted customers to your web site, you will convert more visitors into buyers, make more sales and make more money.

There are step-by-step directions in applying all of these techniques to your business in my Complete Step by Step Online Marketing Course. Get the course before your competition does, and get ahead!

Turn Your Web Site Visitors Info Customers

Friday, August 11th, 2006

There are a few reasons why your numerous web site visitors are not turning into customers:

– You might be attracting the wrong customers. You need to make sure that your marketing/advertising is communicating the right message to the right people. If people who come to your web site are not your target market, they will NOT buy, and you will end up with too many web site visitors, and not enough customers.

– Your web copy/images/web site content might not be doing a good job explaining your products. Even if your target customers come to your web site, you still need to do a good job convincing them that they need YOUR products.

– It is confusing how to place an order. When a customer is ready to place an order, it needs to be as simple as possible. If people find that things are confusing on your web site, they leave instead of placing on order.

My Turn Your Reluctant Website Visitors Into Enthusiastic Customers Special Report  describes in detail how to deal with the too many visitors, not enough customers issue.

Best Colors For Your Web Site

Friday, August 11th, 2006

Do you know how to use colors to further your message and keep peopleon your web site, instead of them running away in horror as soon as they see your web site?

One of the services I provide to my clients is web site evaluation. I have reviewed many web sites, and I have seen pretty much every color of the rainbow used on the web site. Sometimes the colors are all wrong, and my eyes start to actually hurt after looking at a web site for a few minutes. Too many bright colors, blinking banners and moving words take the attention away from the web site’s message.

On the other hand, a good design and a good color scheme stays in the background and lets the web site visitors concentrate of what’s really important – the web copy.

Free AOL Service Confusing To Customers

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

According to this WSJ article, AOL’s Switch To Free Features Sows Confusion.

“As laid out by AOL, paying subscribers who ignore the change will stay on their current plan at the existing rate. Those who have an alternative Internet connection can use AOL software and its virus and spyware protection — without a monthly charge.”

AOL still offers other paying packages to its consumers. What seems to be confusing to many people who have received an email about the free AOL service was how to actually switch to the free plan.

Is your web copy clear to your clients? It might be crystal clear to YOU (of course, you wrote it), but it could be extremely confusing to your web site visitors. And, when people are confused by what they are reading, they usually don’t take advantage of the offer.

How To Start Online Home Based Business

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

So you started a home based to work from home. How can you get customers to actually come and buy from you? Here are five tips to get you started:

Get a Web Site for your Business. Getting a web site online is just like opening a store in the brick and mortar world. Even if your company provides a web site for you, get your own web site. It is going to be much easier to promote, get search engine traffic and get customers when you have your own, not a company-given web site.

Make sure the Web Site is usable and search engine friendly. Many times a web site owner designs a web site that the owner likes. The problem is, the web site is very business owner-oriented, instead of being customer-oriented. Remember – it is not about you, it is about the customers. Ask a few people from your target market to test drive the web site for you, and to tell you what they liked/disliked about it.

This way you will know that your target customers like and are interested in using your web site.

Start learning about Search Engines. You might not become a search engine specialist, but it is important to know how search engines work, and why they send more traffic to one web site, and less traffic to another. To get started, read the Basics of Search Engine Optimization article. For more in-depth information on getting search engine traffic to your web site, get Step by Step Search Engine Optimization Report.

Get a Newsletter for your Web Site. When people come to your web site, you don’t want them to leave empty-handed and never return. So ask them to sign up for your newsletter. They might not buy from you on their first visit, but capturing their email address will help you keep in touch with them and market to them at a later date.

Start a Link Exchange on your web site. Exchanging links with good, quality sites will help you get more traffic and search engine rankings. Avoid web sites that are full of banners and are not professional looking.

Put together a plan to market your web site even before your web site is complete. A web site is a brochure about your business, but you also need traffic to come to it. Do You Have Web Site Traffic, But Not Enough Product Sales?

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Every few days I receive questions from business owners, who have been marketing their web sites for a while. They are listed in search engines, participate in link exchanges, some even have their own affiliate programs.

All of these online marketing techniques are driving traffic to their web sites, but are not bringing in sales. Many business owners turn to me to help them analyze their web site, and tell them why the customers are coming, but not buying.

There are a few reasons this might be happening. Here are online business tips to help you figure it out:

1. Check your traffic sources. Are these web sites really sending you traffic? Many of my clients think that particular web sites are bringing in a lot of traffic, but looking at their web site statistics sometimes shows this not to be the case.

Don’t just think that certain web sites bring in traffic – check the statistics to be sure. To see how much traffic you are getting from those web sites, check your web site statistics.
No traffic = no sales.

2. Check the web site traffic quality If the web site statistics show that you are getting a lot of traffic from different web sites, check to see what kind of traffic they are sending you. For your web site traffic to actually bring in sales, their target traffic and your target customers should be the same.

If their traffic is interested in toys, and you are selling high end real estate, that traffic will not buy from you.

3. Check your own web site. If the web sites are sending you traffic, and the traffic is good(meaning it is in the same target market as your customers), than the problem might be at your end. You might need to make your web site more user friendly, make it easier for your customers to buy through your web site, etc. The Turn Web Site Visitors info Customers Special Report discusses how to make sure that your web site actually SELLS.
