Publishing Newsletters versus Publishing Blogs

Here are some thoughts on publishing newsletters versus publishing blogs:

Newsletters are great because they reach your customers’ mailboxes. Checking email is one of the basic things that pretty much everyone does, so even if your customers don’t have the time to browse your web site or blog, they will still check their email and see your newsletter.

However, with all the spam, spam filtering and spam laws, it is becoming harder and harder to reach customers’ maiilboxes in the first place. Many newsletters end up in the trash, because they trigger spam filters. If your newsletter ends up in the trash, the customer will not even see it.

There are many services that help you create and send out your newsletter. For example, take a look at Constant Contact. Right now there is a free 60 day trial, and you can use it free for a newsletter of 0-50 subscribers. Constant Contact also tells you which customer read/did not read your newsletter. This should give you an idea of a percentage of people reading your newsletter.

Blogs are great because you don’t have to worry about spamming. Since you are not sending out email, there is no way to being accused of spamming and no way for your message to end up in the trash. Blogs are also great because they help you get more search engine rankigs.

However, it is harder to get people to go to your blog and read it every time it is updated, as not many people are using RSS technology to be notified of blog updates.
