Online Marketing For Coaches: Search Engine Optimization Tutorial: How To Use Keywords In Title Tag

Once you have done your keyword research and find the keywords that you want to use on your coaching web site, you need to learn where to use them.

The Title tag is a very important element of a web page. The title tag is the first line of information about a web site displayed by search engine result pages. Search engines place significant emphasis on the content of the title tag.

There are two completely different but equally important audiences for the Title tag:

- Web Surfers. Search engine results contain the text in the Title Tag (first line of the listing), followed by additional descriptive information, which can either be the description meta-tag or a snippet from the body of the page.

Simply having a web site listed in the top 30 positions (or first three pages) in SERPs is not enough; it is extremely important to have a relevant and informational Title tag that grabs web surfers’ attention and encourages them to visit your site.

- Search Engines. Search engines give significant weight to the content of the Title tag. Remember to include relevant keywords in the Title tag on every page.

An effective Title tag contains some information about the web page, as well as a keyword or two. It must also be interesting enough to get a web surfer to click over to your site from the search engine result pages.

Here are a few examples of ineffective Title tags (the actual text is shown in bold):

Our Company, Inc.

Explanation: Unless your company is a household name, few people are aware of its existence, much less its products and services. Potential customers have no way of associating your company’s name with products and services they are searching for. This title doesn’t contain any keywords and provides no relevant information.

Good Widgets, Cute Widgets, Pink Widgets, Brown Widgets, Widgets R Us, Grey Widgets, Yellow Widgets, Black Widgets.

Explanation: This one suffers from the “too much of a good thing” problem. It includes too many keywords and is excessively long. Many search engines detect such keyword stuffing and may penalize your page for this.

[No Title at All]

OR

Put Your Title Here

OR

Your Title – MostExcellent WebSite Design Software

Explanation: Many people forget to include a title on the page. Even worse, sometimes web designers do not override the default title created by site management software and end up with gems like “Your Title Here – MostExcellent WebSite Design Software” as the title of a page. Avoid this unless you have an advertising agreement with MostExcellent WebSite Design Software.

Let’s convert the titles above into more effective ones:

Home Decor and Furniture – Our Company, Inc.

Explanation: The Title is now much more descriptive. It contains a few keywords and describes exactly what to expect on the web site (home décor and furniture).

Good, Cute, Pink and Brown Widgets

Explanation: By limiting the number of keywords we are emphasizing the most important products. The title is now much shorter and easier to read.

Any Title

Explanation: Any title is better then nothing at all (and much better than advertising your web authoring software by showing the default wording). Use tips and techniques outlined in this report to create effective titles for your web pages.
