Online Marketing For Coaches: Search Engine Optimization Tutorial: How To Use Description Meta Tag For SEO

The Description Meta Tag is another meta tag that you should use on every web page of your coaching web site. Using this meta tag will help you get better results with search engine optimization.

Contents of the description Meta Tag may be displayed in the search engine results for your web page. Often, the title of the page is the first line of the listing, followed by the description meta tag.

Some search engines do not always follow this rule and may display snippets of a page that contain search keywords instead of the description. Nevertheless, the title tag/description format is used at least some of the time by most search engines.

Your potential coaching clients will gather additional information about your site from the description meta tag. An effective tag contains a few sentences that describes the page using a few keywords. Avoid using description tags that are much longer than 250 characters.

Here are a few examples of ineffective description tags:

Our Company, Inc is located in AnyTown, Any State, USA. Visit our web site to see our stuff.

Explanation Of Why This Is Ineffective: This description does not say anything at all. What does the company produce? What will I see if I visit the web site? After reading the description, I am as almost as clueless about the company as I was before reading it. The location of the company is usually irrelevant, unless the products or services are limited to a certain geographical area. (It’s not cost effective to ship a car from New York to Kansas for repairs).

Good Widgets, Cute Widgets, Red Widgets, Purple Widgets, Widgets R Us, Pink Widgets, Green Widgets, Black Widgets.

Explanation Of Why This Is Ineffective: Don’t repeat information in the title tag or the keyword tag, word for word, over and over, redundantly, ad nauseum. Resist the temptation, even though it’s the easiest way to generate the description tags. Invest some time into creating an informative description tag.

No Description Meta Tag At All.

Explanation Of Why This Is Ineffective: This problem is as common as the one with the title tags with one minor difference: obnoxious web authoring software usually doesn’t use this tag to advertise itself.

Now let’s look at better description tags:

We create unique home furniture and decor. Visit our web site to see the latest in couches, ottomans, dining tables and home decor.

Explanation: From this description you can understand exactly what the web site is selling and what kind of information to expect when visiting this site. The description contains a few keywords related to the products sold on the site.

The web site contains information and essays about a broad range of widgets. We have researched and collected information about pink, gold, brown and other popular widgets.

Explanation: Now the Description Meta Tag is not exactly the same as the title or Keyword Meta Tag. This provides an excellent opportunity to reinforce the keywords used on the page.

Any Description At All.

Explanation: Any description is better then no description. Create an interesting description for the web page; try to craft one that get a web surfer to visit your page.

Congratulations! You have completed researching keywords and included relevant tags. You have made good progress, but the job is not quite done yet. The keywords should be used in the body of the page.
