A web site is a collection of web pages, connected together logically and functionally. Read this article to learn how to optimize your whole coaching web site for search engines.
What happens when there is a new web page on your coaching web site? How can search engines find it? Search engine crawlers find new web pages by following links from the pages they already know about.
Crawlers will not be able to index the entire site if individual pages are not connected to one another. The only way search engines could find these disconnected, “orphaned” pages would be if an external site linked directly to them. Follow these guidelines to create a good navigation system for your site:
- Create a clear, usable navigation system for your coaching web site. Your navigation system should contain links to all of the main sections of the site. This will help both search engines and web site visitors find any section of the web site, no matter which web page they initially landed on.
For example, at https://www.avocadoconsulting.com we use a navigation system on the left hand side, that connects the main sections of the web site. The navigation looks the same on every page of the web site.
- Create a Site Map for your coaching web site. A site map is page on your web site that links to every single page on your web site, section by section. Link to the site map from the front page. This structure will ensure that all pages can be reached from the home page.
Let’s look at an example. Bob has an “articles” section on his site. The site map lists the main page of the articles section, followed by links to each individual article. The same structure is repeated for each section of the site.
- Make sure that every page on your web site is reachable from any other page on your web site. They may be reachable directly, or through other pages, but ultimately, if you start on any page of your web site, you should be able to reach any other page on your web site. This structure is known as Complete Reachability.
Complete Reachability means that if you start on any page on a web site you can reach any other page by following a series of links. A web site visitor or a search engine spider can start browsing your web site on any page. Someone may really like one of your articles and link directly to it, instead of linking to the front page. Search engines will then start crawling your site from that page.
